This book was first published in 2016, and here I am, coming up to ten years later, writing this preface after having made all sorts of little edits and changes.
Why? (Yes, I can clearly hear you asking!)
Well, let me explain. My writing process for any story involves going backward and forwards, creating links between events that help ensure that everything ‘adds up’ at the end. I think it is where I do the ‘clever bits’, and without it nothing is every balanced up correctly.
But I have learned the hard way that my process for single books did not work when applied to a whole series, where parts were published and ‘set in stone’. Some threads subsequently forced me down paths which, given the freedom of the unpublished, I would have changed or redirected. I increasingly found that my characters wanted to develop, needed to even, in ways that I had not provided room for.
Yes, I admit it. Some things about Sapphira and friends I only realised years after I first published!
So, this new addition serves a purpose. Let me make clear, though, that it was not my intention to make significant changes to the basic story, and most of the text is quite unaltered. What I have done here is to to smooth out certain aspects and improve the flow of the overall series. Here and there I might simplify things and, hopefully, clarify my ideas for the reader. The roots of themes I want to later develop are now more firmly planted.
Overall, making these modifications has been quite an interesting experience. A little painful, a little exciting, but ultimately it was an itch that need to be scratched.
So here we are. The other books in the series will be likewise updated, and some will need more changes than others. But this one was first.
